The Unfolding/Blossoming S.A. Scene

The scene is very strong and confident of what its doing and its already meeting the global standards. The beauty of it is that we in S.A. got a lot of stories to tell, alot of them haven’t yet been told too. No disrespect but we got more interesting stories to tell then a lot of the shit thats around today globally, we got our own unique music on the continent…and we in Hip Hop are trying to put all those elements together to create a clear picture. Also in terms of beatmaking, lyrical contents and delivery, our African MC’s are unique…no duplications.

The S.A. Underground scene is big…its actually creeping up thru the whole continent, especially in Southern Africa in terms of the exchange of S.A cats and cats from outside… Its quite a hot spot for people from outside. Hip Hop is an inspiration for a lot of kids out here and also the older folk is starting to realize that this is not only a hobby but we are actually building a career out of it and sustaining it. Also to convey a message… we are a nation that came out of struggle…

We always had a movement of consciousness behind what we do… Hip Hop is now serving as a medium to relay that consciousness in relation to circumstances to what we faced with in this new era, new dispensation. We basically out here to spread the message, to exchange thoughts / ideas, to expose the bullshit of these conspiracy motha fuckers. To shed the light, to shed the light on truth and LIVE!!The things that are felt the most on a day-to-day level, is that some new doors have opened, more opportunities for cats in Hip Hop to come out and live. There is alot of youth oriented programmes and funds as a result of the process of democritization ...take the good out of everything and leave the rest alone.

Yeah there are enough clichés floating around in peoples minds...like 10 years of Democracy and all of that… its a good vibe, a good thing, a positive concept that is suppose to up-lift us all, but whats been happening is that there are alot of people that aren’t even accessed by concepts like democracy, like they can’t get to that…like its democracy... but its up there on the mountain type of thing. You got to go to war in order to achieve that thing. Ultimitely it effects the work of Hip Hop artists in a way that we can comment on it, but we not trying to swim in that mainstream shit.

The government and the ruling classes are trying the paint a pretty picture to the world about the new S.A. Like the Department of Trade and Industry used graffiti artists (JHB-based MSE crew) just before the 1994-elections to launch a small business campaign. These graff-writers were committioned to do graff-style advertisement of the governments initiative to assist small business ventures in township and poor income areas. The fact of the matter is that one of these writers are currently in jail facing illegal graff charges. What now?…Yeah everything looks a little different but thats what they want you to think, if it looks different then it must obviously be different…Shit hasn’t really changed its still the same…its just at the surface that it looks different. The same people who had their fingers in the pie is still running the economy, still running everything. Its all good if graffiti suites them but if it doesn’t sell, lock them up and throw away the key. Shit is getting heavy, cats are getting shot at, hunted down. So everytime you go out to paint trains there is a chance that you can die, there are private police that are trigger happy. Cats have dodgged bullets…its no lie!

The scene has come along way since the days of Prophets of the City and The Base days... The older cats really paved the way and nuff shout out to the Shayeen's, Jazzmo's, Rozanno's, Ready D's, Falko's, Black Noises's and a list that the space here don't allow us to continue...but the fucking shitstem has made a commodity of the shit... now you can catch a Pep Stores / Edgars and whatnot advert blatently, blasphemasely using Hip Hop to up their sales in their adolescent department. Yeah they using graffiti in the background with some cat spinning on his head...its like high-fashion.'Hey mommy, I like that! can I buy that...', type of thing. Someone is making more money from this and its not the Hip Hop heads reaping the benefits. Africa got a very unique placing on a global scale...its right smack in the centre (mr.Venter)of the your bullshit, influenced (actually fucked) from all angles and we at the base of mother continent have bare witness to the whole unfolding fucking skabangle...the dialy shananigans of the Third World Hustlers! We've heared and seen most of what the world got to offer and what do they know about us... Johny Clegg and PJ Powers... Well hold on to your bra-strapps and tighten your laces, cause the shit from our side is about to fucken kill shit world wide. Our time has come and the time is now...Clean out your ears and open your minds and wallets...link with our cats thru the net, book our artist for your Festivals, put our cats on your radio play-lists and buy our CD's... for the time has come. The time is now... The building blocks are in place... lets build some ill shit!
