In March 2000,
one of the most proliffic underground crews Ground
Works, was given an opportunity to host a Hip-Hop
show (appropriately called the "Hotbox")
over UCT-airwaves. Wow, you could here MC from all
over shredding each other with battle rhymes, catch
local productions, laugh for the humour of presenters
and be informed about just about-everything you needed
to know about park jams, shows, graff-writers benches
and whatnot. Its got a huge following too, and currently
"X the 24th Letter" from Archetypes are
running processions.
Once you enter
the UCT cafeteria you can hear the crescendo of echoing
voices and laughs which kinda gives you the "Full
Monty" of student-vibes... and carefully tucked
away in the corner, you find UCT radio. With graffiti
on their walls, a flyer rack with every possible event
from Cape Town to Cairo and happy, smiley and (I have
to say helpful) faces you want to almost hang-around
the premisses longer then you need to. But then you
remember a previous invitation from one of the other
students inviting you to the roof of the Chemistry
building.... Aha! A pleasure to visit!
