Oil Spills : Filming the Underground

Leaders in their field of underground-filming, its primary objective amounts to capturing moments around the Hip Hop scene all over Southern Africa, whether it is performances on stage, off-stage free-style cyphers in dark alleys, park-jams, B-boy shows, graff-writers benches, album launches to national tours. This production company literally lurks in the shadows of artist as they go about in their day to day activities; doing interviews to get the preverbial "straight out of the horses mouth" perspective.

Mainly stemming from the Jo'burg area they've made invaluable links and contacts all over South Africa concretising a strong connection with the artists they are featuring. They worked closely with the Concentration Camp Collective including Ground Works, BaseMental Platform, AbNormal Details, Cashless Society, Audio Visual, Uncanny Cessmen...

With a natural flair to formulate more then just an interesting way of presentation, their work can by called dynamic and very authentic, with a street wise tone that underlines everything. Over the last 2 years, they have created an archive of footages of just about almost, every underground artist you can think of in the S.A. scene. Amongst others, they've filmed the Concentration Camps' Show at Wits University, the BMP- Durban album launch, a Cashless Society show at CD-Warehouse, the Hueman Tribute Show and many other gigz. Completely an independet structure relying on their on back pockets to pay for equipment and film supplies... A force to be reckoned with in the underground film world!

They're really sitting on a goldmine... way ahead for their time.

Oil Spills is also involved with the Urban Culture Development Project in terms of film and editing work, forming the backbone of the process. For this project Camilla Colley (Certificate in Film, Editing and Production) has also come aboard, along with New Media Productions and Met04. These structures together has realized the importance of developing urban cultures with a strong focus on music which proves to be an important outlet for the youth to express and sustain themselves. However providing a documentary be it for research, promotion, education, awareness or cultural integration requires extensive planning and funding. Which is much needed on the South African side to provide material for the exchange of artist, radio programmes and audio-visual documentaries with structures abroad.

You can just image the TV broadcasting-companies knocking on their door to get their hands on the Oil Spills footage.
