5th Floor lyrics reveal hidden meanings in everyday life while drawing on lessons from our common ancestry. Members are from diverse backgrounds and locations in Africa and address the current state of affairs based on their experience. The representatives are from Langa & Gugulethu/ Bloemfontein/ Zwelitsha (Eastern Cape)/ Juaneng (Botswana)/ Spruitview (Gauteng).
In keeping with the ethics of hip-hop the 5th Floor encourage Knowledge-Of-Self which has motivated and inspired the crew in many ways. The relevance of such concepts are universal and apply to underprivileged communities where there is a large hip-hop audience and many 5th Floor supporters.
Over the years 5th Floor have been performers at live events and club functions. Hosted by dsp(DarkerShadeofPhunk) with DJ Hamma - we attended Boogie Down Knights and WordLife sessions which emphasise the excitement and relevance of wordplay in hip-hop and life. 5th Floor appeared at the Josi vs Cape Town(Battle) at Dockside, “Overspray “ event and appeared on the soundtrack of this award winning Graffiti documentary. The crew also appeared at Tedelex/Y-fm Hip Hop competition at the JHB Zoo. (2003)
We have been receiving airplay from Y-fm for 4 our tracks. One of the 4 singles (Creation) has been released on a Harambe, African Dope compilation.
The 5th Floor have presented workshops at high schools such as Westerford and Langa Comprehensive High(Cpt) to matric pupils. The most recent workshop was at Rylands High(Cpt) as part of a youth demonstration about peace. We have also been part of Youth Day celebrations at the Goode Hope Centre in Cape Town in conjunction with the Metropolitan Council.
In the international arena we had collaborative performances with Ninja Tunes artists, Jean Grey & Mr.Len of Rawkus Entertainment during their 2000 tour to S.A. There have been individual or crew appearances at music festivals like Tukkelpop(Belgium), African Dancers(Germany), Splash in Fen, Oppikoppi, Woodstock(South Africa).
5th Floor believe truth is an integral mechanism to create awareness and mobilise an active listening audience. Our objective is also to enlighten listeners as this is vital to the functioning of any form of innovative communication.
