Fire in the Mountain : S.A.
premier Hip Hop Festival
The
main aim of this Festival is to give exposure to South
African artists who've been marginalized by the mainstream.
This is an opportunity for MC's and Ragga heads from
townships across the country to raise social fire alarms
through their rhymes about life; things that "piss
them off" and moments that make it all worth while.
Unlike monotonous mainstream sounds, the crews that
are selected have a social message about their distinctly
South African experience.
Fire
on the Mountain was conceptualized by a group of artists,
filmmakers and social activist who call themselves the
Imbawula Trust (imbawula is the Zulu name for the tin
drum which is used by people in townships, to contain
fires and which they stand around to keep warm). The
Trust aim is to empower largely unknown artists by providing
information on everything from the dangers of signing
certain recording contracts to marketing themselves.
Along with the
focus on music-and-dance, Fire on the Mountain also
showcases work of independent filmmakers in specially
erected movie tents; other visual artists like photographers
and graff writers will also have their work on display. So
if you want to camp out under the stars in the sublime
setting of the La Motte Farm with the Berg River running
through it and witness cutting edge artists performing
against the backdrop of majestic mountains don't miss
the Fire on the Mountain. The next one takes place the
last weekend in February! Be there or be square!

The organizers
are also very interested in linking up with other
Festival management to form a sister-festival and
for people from abroad to form a support base ("friends
of the festival") of links and contacts with
the Imbawula Trust...
